Optometrist
Magda has been an optometrist for 22 years and has been running her own shop, Nador Optika in downtown Budapest, for 8 years. When I ask her about how it all began, she smiles: “It is an interesting story,” she says. “It all started with the fact that I don’t speak Romanian.”
She tells me she is from Transylvania (the region of Romania that used to belong to Hungary prior to World War II) and as she couldn’t speak Romanian, there was no way for her to fulfil her dream to become a doctor. Her brother who lived in Germany at the time suggested to her that she becomes an optometrist. She moved to Hungary and started a course at Ofotert, the only, state-run optical company back then. She soon fell in love with the profession, continued to study at another training and became an optometrist.
“What makes me most happy about this job is to see the smile on people’s faces when they put on their new glasses,” she says .”They can SEE again and a whole new world opens before their eyes.”
Magda has had over 4000 patients over the years and some 1000 of them keep returning to her! I am one of them 🙂 She loves when some of her patients come to her shop first as children and keep coming back to her for checkups even after years.

Magda 22 eve dolgozik opometristakent es 8 eve vezeti a sajat boltjat, a Nador Optikat, Budapest belvarosaban. Amikor megkerdezem, hogyan is kezdodott az egesz, mosolyog: “Ez egy erdekes tortenet,” mondja. “Ugy kezdodott minden, hogy nem beszelek romanul.”
Elmeseli, hogy Erdelybol valo es mivel nem beszel romanul, nem tudott orvosi egyetemre menni. A batyja, aki akkoriban Nemetorszagban elt, javasolta neki ezt a szakmat. Igy hat a rendszervaltas idejen Magyarorszagra koltozott es az Ofotertnel tanult. Hamarosan beleszeretett a munkaba es tovabb folytatta a tanulast, majd optometrista lett.
“Azt szeretem legjobban ebben a munkaban, amikor az emberek felveszik az uj szemuveget es mosolyognak,” meseli. “Ujra LATNAK es egy uj vilag tarul fel a szemuk elott.”
Az evek alatt Magdanak tobb mint 4000 paciense volt es kb. 1000 kozuluk visszajar hozza, koztuk en is 🙂 Nagyon szereti, amikor paciensei eloszor gyerekkent jonnek el hozza es evek mulva is visszaternek a boltjaba szemvizsgalatra.
